Making friends and keeping true to yourself...

During your collegiate career at Auburn you will make many acquaintances. I say "acquaintances" because most of these encounters will be brief and although you make use the term "friend" it is loosely implied. As you grow older you will grow out of people...kind of like you grew out of clothes when you were a kid. There is nothing wrong with this and it is to be expected. Not everyone is going to be your "bff." Growing up (and out of things) is as natural as breathing. It is what enables us to… Continue

What it feels like to almost be an Auburn graduate...

So this is it. I'm almost there. The end is in sight. In quantifiable, finger and toes numbered days. I think? I've been in the digital resource library approximately 5-8 hours a day for the last week. I've consumed more red bulls this week than I have in the entire previous month. Right now I have a web page that is created, yet not launched and a knot in my stomach the size of the hard drive sitting in front of me. One would think the thought of all this being done would be such a huge relie… Continue

Marketing at its best...

Fear not previous blog readers O'mine...this blog will not be depressing or even remotely deep for that matter! Ha! It actually started as a random email to a friend and I decided to make it into a blog... So I have to admit, I recently bought into Gillette's most recent marketing scheme of the "five blade for a smoother shave" razor. Last night instead of purchasing the refill cartridges for my normal lowly "three" blade razor, I bought the new five blade. Of course, the skeptical part of my… Continue

Sticks Country Music Festival is just weeks away. The weather is getting warmer and the itch to get outside and dance can soon be itched! Auburn Football, 2009

Auburn's recent recruiting season is every reason for Auburn fans to start getting excited. Given all of the turmoil surrounding Auburn’s football program this offseason, the new staff did a commendable job of pulling in some playmakers. When Tommy Tuberville resigned, all hope appeared to be lost for this recruiting class. The four stars were dropping like flies. But out of the ashes came Gene Chizik with hires on his staff that no one would have thought he could put together. It started wit… Continue

Reading is Fundamental--Help a Child Learn to Read

Children are one of the most important assets to our future. We must put them as our number one priority because our world will be in their hands all too soon. There are many organizations in the United States and around the world that help children in many different aspects. One such organization is located here locally and is in need of your support. Jean Dean RIF (Reading Is Fundamental) is a non-profit organization started in 1990 by Alabama Kiwanis Governor, Joe Dean. The program is named… Continue

Severe Weather Awareness Week Brings Severe Weather

It’s snowing! That was probably the first thing most Auburn residents thought when they woke up Sunday morning. Snow in the South is a rare occurrence; tornados and severe weather however, are not. Inclement weather is not usual in the South. So why am I writing about it? Well, ironically enough, this week was Severe Weather Awareness Week for the state of Alabama. This year the Severe Weather Awareness Week was designated for Feb. 23-27. The main purpose of this is to educate Alabamians on h… Continue

Earth Hour comes to Auburn

Tuesday evening at the Auburn city council meeting was just like any other. Ordinances were discussed, voted on and passed. Auburn University's SGA President and Vice President were given commendation for their last year of service, Miss Auburn/Opelika spoke about bringing awareness of breast cancer to Auburn and William Blankley came to the podium to talk about "Earth Hour." 2009 happens to be the 400th anniversary of the discovery of the telescope. Due to this monumental year, more eyes than… Continue

Hot wings, or HOT WINGS!

Wings One would think good wings would be something sought after and bragged about in a college town…but apparently not sought after enough. After having barbecue twice last week, I decided to postpone the continuance of the barbecue reviews for another time. Instead I chose to pursue buffalo wings, something that I love dearly. Monday nights are wing night at Loco’s. Yes Loco’s. Apparently they have more to offer than just a good burger. I heard this from a co-worker (not the same one) who… Continue

Barbecue on the Plains

Last week I tried a few burgers from suggestions, looking for the “best” burger in Auburn. While it is impossible for me to try every burger in Auburn, I was able to at least declare a winner from the few I tried. A good burger can be found just about anywhere, but such is not the case with the food I pursued this week. Barbecue. Not all barbecue is created equal, and not everywhere in the country is barbecue as easily to find as in the South. If there is one thing Southerners know, it’s good… Continue

The groundswell at Auburn

As part of a public relations, style and design class, we have been required to read a book called "Groundswell-winning in a world transformed by social technologies." Weekly we read a chapter and write a blog on it. Every week, as I read I'm struck by just how much of this stuff we already do every day and are participating in this "groundswell" without even realizing it. This site, facebook, myspace, itunes, wikkipedia, youtube, amazon, it's all a part of this technologically social phenomen… Continue

New Student Rec Center Up for a Vote

No one likes standing in lines. Not at the grocery store, not at a restaurant, not even at the amusement park. So why would someone stand in the line at the gym? If you’re a student at Auburn University, this is what you experience every time you go to the activities center. That is why they are building a new one. “There are long lines and the atmosphere is awkward because all the equipment is so close together,” Lindsay Jones, an Auburn University senior said. The Auburn Recreation and Welln… Continue

The Best Burger on the Plains (or in my mouth...)

A burger isn't just a burger. It's an experience, something to be savored, enjoyed and if done right, you should have a need for more than one napkin. For my burger rating I am going to make the experience a 1-10 scale, 1 being the worst, 10 the best. On that scale the burger can get a total of 5 points, fries 2.5 and service 2.5. The first stop on my list was Loco's on College Street. The Scout Burger, an eight ounce patty, blackened, with jalapenos and Monterey Jack cheese, served with a side… Continue

Small things that can make a difference

Most cities see an increase of crime during the holiday season. Auburn was no different over the 2008 holiday season. According to Auburn Police though, 2008 as a whole saw in increase in crime in Auburn. As a college town the opportunity for theft is generally higher. Younger people seem to be more trusting and people in the south, some say, friendlier than other areas of the country. While preventing yourself from being a target altogether isn’t realistic, there are a few things you can do t… Continue

The Best of The Best

It has been said that baseball is America’s favorite past time. That’s debatable in the South. But there is one thing I am sure all Americans have in common, food. We love to eat. In a college town, there should always be a few standards that every student knows where to go to get the best. In the coming weeks I’m going to find those places for you. The best burgers, pizza, hot wings, steaks, subs and more. I’ll be hunting for the best flavors at the best price so we all can eat well but do it… Continue

Cell phone etiquette

Cell phones are a part of life, no matter who you are or how much you hate them, they are here to stay. They are a “necessary evil” some might say. We’ve all been in a pickle before and whipped out our handy, dandy cell phone and a crisis was averted. Knowing all of this doesn’t change the fact that people on cell phones, are annoying. Just like etiquette at the dinner table is necessary to keep from being viewed as a total caveman, so is cell phone etiquette necessary to keep you from becoming… Continue
