The quaint city of Auburn is nearly perfect for a college town. It has mod, little coffee shops, trendy boutiques and unique eateries; basically, all the signature college town favorites. But ask any college student who has gone to school at Auburn and there is one thing that Auburn has been missing- a doughnut shop.
Doughnuts are an American classic, you hardly ever meet someone who doesn't like a warm, fresh doughnut. And, in that same matter, every good town has at least one good doughnut shop.
The city of Auburn just filled that missing link. Daylight Donuts, a worldwide network, has just opened on South College Street in Auburn. With almost 1,000 stores worldwide, each branch of the chain is independently owned and operated.
Based out of Tulsa, Okla. Daylight Donuts has served as a signature doughnut chain in the West and Northwest since the 1950's. The doughnut shop is creeping it's way into the Southeast as they have opened stores in Ala., Ga., Miss. and Fla.
The doughnut shop's claim to fame is its signature light flavor and texture; and, Auburn University students have enjoyed it thoroughly enjoyed the since its grand opening last Tuesday, April 7.
"I had a group presentation the day the that Daylight Donuts opened," said student Callie Barfell, "We had to earn creative points and our presentation was on a hotel, so we had a mock continental breakfast and served 4 dozen doughnuts."
"It came in handy," said Barfell, "because after having the doughnuts our class picked us for best creativity; so, we got bonus points!"
Auburn students have been eating this shop up- literally.
"I like their coffee," said student Jeff Hajek, "Nothing like a hot doughnut and coffee."
As all college students know coffee is a staple.
"I really think Daylight Donuts will do well in Auburn because it's a monopoly, there are no other doughnut shops here," said Hajek.
The general buzz around campus is the same. Everyone seems to be excited about this addition.
"I know people who have driven to Montgomery just to get Krispy Kreme," said student Leah Hand, "Doughnuts are a hot commodity around here."
As surprising as it is, the shop has open full force in an economic crunch time. And, whereas is may be difficult in the beginning for Daylight Donuts, Auburn students feel like the store will be a successes.
"I'm surprised anyone is opening a business with the way things are right now," said Hand, "But I, for one, am glad they did. They should do fine because they are one of a kind around here, there is no competition."
"The best part about Daylight is that it is open for 24 hours a day," said student Ashley Ahner, "And, I know that I need my 2 am doughnut fix; it's perfect for college kids."
Whether it's a classic glazed, a cruller, a chocolate sprinkle or a long john all of these should be a tasty treat for those who have survived long enough in a city without doughnuts.
