The Auburn University Environmental Awareness Organization (EAO) will be hosting its annual Earth Fest at the AU arboretum on Saturday, April 4 from 12 to 5 p.m.
Earth Fest is an all day outdoor concert that celebrates the Earth as well as promotes environmental friendliness.
“A lot of awesome bands will be playing and supporting our club,” said EAO president Paul Warren.
Bands such as Proof Rabbit, Brown Kid, The Suex Effect, and many more will be performing throughout the day. For a complete list of bands, look at EAO’s website www.auburn.edu/eao.
EAO will be selling grilled cheese sandwiches and other vegetarian foods to raise money for the student organization. All of the cups and plates used to serve the food and beverages will be all bio-degradable materials, a natural alternative to plastic or Styrofoam.
“It’s free and everyone is invited so we’re hoping for a big turnout,” said Warren. “It will be a great day to hang out, listen to good music and promote the Earth’s wellbeing.”
For a lot of people, it’s their first time to ever visit the arboretum and they discover a hidden treasure tucked away between College Street and the Hill residence halls, said Warren.
This year’s Earth Fest will be the same format as last year’s with only a change in bands.
“We’ll have tables from all kinds of organizations around campus and in the community set up so people can learn about how they can be more environmentally friendly and get more information on sustainability that they might not get anywhere else,” said Warren who is also interning with the AU office of sustainability this semester.
April is full of eco-friendly events and projects in around campus and in the community. In preparation of Earth Fest, EAO will be having an event on March 28 called Earth Hour. All around the world on March 28 from 8-9 p.m., universities and organizations will be turning off lights and all forms of electricity for one hour to conserve energy.
EAO will be on the concourse the week before to spread the word so as many students as possible will participate in the efforts.
AU’s energy manager of facilities, Ken Martin, is facilitating Earth Hour by shutting off a variety of building’s lights on campus to join forces with EAO to save energy.
The Earth’s birthday, also known as Earth Day, is on Wednesday, April 22 and the EAO will be continuing the month of awareness and Earth-appreciation activities for this special occasion. The celebration will last all day on the concourse with music provided by WEGL, dancing and it’s not a birthday without cake.
