The Gold and Silver Exchange store located at 219 N. Gay St. opened on Oct. 19. The sole purpose of this store is to buy used gold and silver items from customers.
The owner, Pat Reno, is not new to the business world in Auburn. In 1980, she and her husband opened the first pawn shop in the city. The shop was located on College Street in the downtown area.
Their first business kept outgrowing their buildings so they relocated a few times, eventually ending up on Opelika Road near Auburn Offroad and Performance and Niffer’s.
When Reno and her husband retired, they moved to Biloxi, Miss. Her retirement, however, was short lived. Her husband passed away, and two years later Reno decided to return to Auburn and open a new family business, Gold and Silver Exchange, with her daughter.
At age 73, Reno said she is more excited than ever to run her own business. She is currently planning on meeting with the zoning board so that in addition to buying and selling gold and silver, she will also be able to pawn jewelry.
At Gold and Silver Exchange, they will buy anything from rings, chains and coins to candlesticks and serving dishes. Reno said that in addition to the permanent residents of the city, she hopes Auburn students will hear about her store and take full advantage of it.
