The Loveliest Village

Last Friday, Auburn's School of Architecture hosted its 20th annual Pumpkin Carve in the courtyard of Dudley Hall.

An all day extravaganza, the school provide snacks and treats for attendees with fun events. Event stations included: pumpkin carving stations with help by architecture students, face painting, costume contests and the highlyrevered Pie-a-Professor, where many students waited their turn to pie the dean of the architecture school.

Music blaring and children scampering the courtyard, it was a fun-filled cool afternoon when the pumpkin carving contest began. The judging was completed once the sun set and the candles were lit. Pumpkin designs this year featured anything from Aubie to President Obama.

David Hinson, professor at the School of Architecture, said the event occurs each year during Halloween and is fun for all Auburn students and staff, as well as the Auburn community.

"The ooh's and the ahh's from the people visiting the pumpkin carve are just fabulous," Hinson said about when the pumpkins are lit and all the work is displayed.

The pumpkin carve also benefited funds for the student organizations in the college.

"The organizing group is the American Institute of Architecture students," Hinson said. "All of our student organizations participate. This year that includes architecture, landscape architecture, community planning and our college council."

The event that attracted the most attention, sponsored by the college council, was the Pie-a-Professor that helped raise money for the scholarship.

"The resources from that contest are going to support a scholarship to honor our recently deceased colleague, D.K. Ruth.," Hinson said.

Pumpkins that were designed by the students were sold after the contest for a minimal fee which displayed intricate designs or famous faces. The leftover pumpkins that are not sold after the contest are recycled into compost, Hinson said.

It will be another year until the 21st annual Pumpkin Carve rolls around, but it is definitely something to look forward to.
