Eating organically: Do the benefits outweigh the price?

It seems like in today's society, for every product there is an organic alternative. But are organic products simply a trend, or are they here to stay? And is the extra cash worth the benefits they provide?

Well first of all, they benefit the environment that we live in, including the air our bodies take in. Organic food is produced without toxins, chemicals and preservatives. Therefore, the food is fresher, even though it may not last as long without the preservatives. That is why snacks with preservatives, including BHT, can have shelf lives of several years. Do you really want to be putting that into your body?

What you do want to be putting into your body is plenty of vitamins and nutrient rich foods. According to a study by 3 WSU researchers, organic foods have higher levels of 8 out of the 11 nutrients studied, and greater polyphenols and antioxidants. When your body gets the right amount of nutrients then your immune system becomes stronger, you have more energy and it simply works better overall.

If organic products are so great for you, then why are they so expensive? Well, they are actually not that expensive considering that they are produced using time-intensive systems in smaller organic farms, according to organic.com. According to the website, organic farmers also do not receive federal subsidies and the price truly reflects the cost of growing the food.

Now that you know some of the benefits organic food has to offer, maybe you will consider paying the extra dollar for fewer pesticides and more nutrients. As for the taste, that is for you to determine.
